Eteläportti – New open virtual platform to model buildings on plots and layout production

Development of the Eteläportti virtual platform is a project managed by Business Jyväskylä, the business services unit of the City of Jyväskylä, and funded by the Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment of Central Finland, the City of Jyväskylä and the Municipality of Muurame. Process Genius Oy, which implemented the virtual platform, will also continue to develop the platform.

The virtual model is embedded in a map, displaying the plot shapes, location data, zoning regulations and, for example, any earthmoving work required before construction begins. The design tools can be used to model the buildings in their actual size, providing a good idea of how any building would fit into the plot. Transport connections can also be assessed.

The virtual platform allows you to create your own different design solutions in a confidential environment without revealing your business secrets. Potential problem areas or nodes can be viewed at a distance in the model, allowing solutions to be considered more quickly and cost-effectively. The virtual model also makes it possible to present plans to customers, staff and partners.

The virtual platform does not require any credentials and can be tested freely. If you want to save your own plan, you need to log in as a user. Saved plans are private and can only be viewed with your own login, which can be obtained from the platform provider Process Genius. Your own plans are not publicly visible and are not visible to other users of the platform.

– The virtual platform is easy to use and guides the user step by step. For added security, if a user is about to delete something from a model, a confirmation screen will always appear before anything is deleted. The virtual model is built to scale, so you can bring your own preliminary design image directly into the model and see immediately what it looks like on the map and model,” says Mikko Myyry from Process Genius Oy, who was responsible for designing the virtual platform.

Production lay-out planning and co-creation with data

The Eteläportti virtual platform also enables, for example, the layout planning of production facilities. Users can estimate how much space a production facility needs. The model will include other data control tools in the future. Users will be able to include items such as a production resource, for example the capacity of a painting unit, which other local actors can reserve. In this way they can avoid setting up their own painting unit, while optimizing the use of an existing resource.

In future, the virtual platform will also use data to enable the creation of new products and service concepts. For example, it is possible to share measurement data collected from a property with different actors. Actors may also select only a certain part of a project that they want to share, and develop it alongside selected actors or, perhaps, customers.

Creating different types of mock-ups, pilots or prototypes in a virtual environment allows multiple actors to be involved in the design process. This reduces the challenges of communication or miscommunication by allowing the virtual environment to model the envisaged developments.

In the future, we will work towards making the virtual platform more data-driven to support decision making. The aim is that different sensors and systems will collect data, which will be stored in selected parts of the platform, and the shared data can be explored in collaboration with different teams and groups of actors to make the best possible decisions. This is when people’s talents and skills are harnessed to where they are best used.

If you wish to contribute your own designs, you can currently do so via Process Genius: etelaportti@processgenius.fi or by leaving your contact details on the feedback form.

A username is created with an email address. No personal data of the user is requested or collected during the registration process. The email address (username) will not be used for any purpose other than as a login and password reset for the user. Saved plans are private and can only be viewed with the login ID of the person who created them.
